Because I think the issue is the effect they have, not where they come from.

Alcohol is a drug which causes more deaths then marijuana, cigaretts are a drug and they kill more people then marijuana and if they dont kill the smoker they cause very long term damage... so with the argument its what they do not where they come from what about what cigaretts and alcohol do....???

Its can be harmful is no reason in my opinion to make something illegal.
If it directly makes you violent that is another story.

I heard a statistic the other day for the US that 70% of murders in the US involve alcohol.

For those interested in the decriminalisation of drugs (such as myself :P) here is a pretty interesting article:

www.forbes.com/sites/erikkain/2011/07/05/ten-years-after-decriminalization-drug-abuse-down-by-half-in-portugal/

Regardless of the reasons why cannabis should or should not be illegal, decriminalising drugs as a whole in my opinion would be much more beneficial for society as it takes drugs out of the criminal context, and into a medical one - and real life examples such as Portugal above (or Denmark) show that rather than drug use increasing with decriminalisation, it decreases.
